USCGC Healy and Russian Tanker Renda Depart Nome

The Coast Guard icebreaker Healy (WAGB 20) and the Russian tanker Renda prepare to depart Nome, Alaska, after delivering more than 1 million gallons of fuel to the isolated and iced-in city. The Healy escorted and broke ice for the Renda from Jan. 3, 2012 to Jan. 14, 2012, when they arrived at Nome and transferred Renda’s load of fuel by means of hoses laid across the final 500 yards of ice. This time-lapse video by Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Eric J. Chandler captures the harsh conditions and stark beauty of the far north.
