V-E Day Commemorated by Warbird Flyover

Today, on Victory in Europe, or V-E Day, beginning just after 12:00 PM, a massive flyover of 15 successive formations of World War II warbirds will pass over the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

The Arsenal of Democracy World War II Capitol Flyover will see one of the most diverse groups of rare vintage warbirds ever assembled fly over the nation’s capitol to honor those who fought the war and those who supported them on the homefront.

Flyover-route

Planned route of the flyover.

Distinct formations of aircraft representing the war’s major battles, from Pearl Harbor through the final air assault on Japan and concluding with a missing man formation, will fly from Culpepper and Manassas Regional Airports. Their route will take them down the Potomac River, over Theodore Roosevelt Island, then turn east as they approach the Lincoln Memorial and fly over the National Mall before curving south again over the Anacostia River. The Arsenal of Democracy World War II Capitol Flyover website will also offer a live webcast of the event.
