USS Hartford (SSN 768) Surfaces Through Arctic Ice | Video

In this U.S. Navy video by MC2 Tyler Thompson and Staff Sgt. Edward Eagerton, the Los Angeles-class submarine USS Hartford (SSN 768) surfaces through Arctic ice near Ice Camp Sargo, within the Arctic Circle. Hartford was participating in Ice Exercise (ICEX) 2016, a five-week exercise designed to research, test, and evaluate operational capabilities in the Arctic. U.S. Navy submarines have regularly operated in the Arctic since the first underwater crossing beneath the North Pole in August 1958, executed by USS Nautilus (SSN 571), the world’s first nuclear submarine.
