DARPA’s ASW Sea Hunter Testing | Video

DARPA is christening its Sea Hunter, the technology demonstration vessel it has developed and built through the Agency’s Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) program that shows great potential as an antisubmarine tracker. The Portland, Oregon, event marks the vessel’s transition to open-water testing to be conducted jointly with the Office of Naval Research (ONR). This unmanned ocean-going vessel is planned to be capable of crossing thousands of miles of ocean for months at a time. While countermine activities have been mentioned as a potential mission, the most exciting application may be as an antisubmarine asset able to trail an enemy submarine with low risk and without respite, and in the future, possibly sink it.
