Battle to Retake Mosul Begins

Iraqi Security Forces have begun the battle to retake Mosul, according to a news release from Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve. “Earlier today, Iraqi Security Forces launched their counter-attack to liberate Mosul from ISIL, also known as Da’esh,” Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend said in an Oct. 17 statement. “This operation to regain control of Iraq’s second-largest city will likely continue for weeks, possibly longer.

USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) Commissioned

USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) was commissioned into the U.S. Navy Saturday at North Locust Point in Baltimore, Maryland, according to a U.S. Navy news release. Zumwalt is the lead ship of a small class of stealthy, high-technology destroyers.

The Pebble Island Raid

The dispute of the Falkland Islands, or Spanish name Las Islas Malvinas, stretches back over four centuries. The islands, located in the southern Atlantic Ocean, are some 7,000 miles from the British Isles and comprise West and East Falkland, with over 100 smaller islands peppered around the perimeter.

USS Nitze (DDG 94) Strikes Coastal Radar Sites in Yemen/Video

In this U.S. Navy video, the guided missile destroyer USS Nitze (DDG 94) launches a strike against three coastal radar sites in Houthi-controlled territory on Yemen’s Red Sea coast. Nitze struck the sites due to attacks on vessels in the Bab-el Mandeb Strait, including against the U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer USS Mason (DDG 87) earlier in the week.
